John Galliano: Horizons Brings Four Decades of Fashion Artistry to The Met
In spring 2027, The Metropolitan Museum of Art will turn its attention to one of fashion’s most influential creative figures with John Galliano: Horizons, the first major museum exhibition dedicated to the full scope of the designer’s career.
Opening May 9, 2027 at The Met Fifth Avenue in New York, the Costume Institute exhibition will bring together garments, accessories, sketches, research books, toiles and archival material spanning more than four decades of creativity. The presentation will explore Galliano’s extraordinary ability to transform history, geography, art, identity and storytelling into highly imaginative fashion.
For The 1%, the exhibition arrives during an era in which fashion, art and cultural patronage increasingly occupy the same collecting universe. According to the Art Basel and UBS Survey of Global Collecting 2025, Ultra High Net Worth Individuals with wealth exceeding $50 million allocated an average of 28 percent of their wealth to art. Within this environment, John Galliano: Horizons positions fashion as an important form of cultural expression and creative scholarship.
From Central Saint Martins to the Paris Couture Houses
The exhibition draws extensively from The Costume Institute’s holdings, which represent the world’s largest museum collection of Galliano’s work.
The story begins with his celebrated 1984 Central Saint Martins graduation collection in London and continues through the development of his own label. His subsequent appointments at Givenchy and Christian Dior established a creative vocabulary shaped by historical research, theatricality, craftsmanship and storytelling.
The exhibition will also explore his tenure at Maison Margiela, culminating with the house’s spring summer 2024 Artisanal collection.
Across these different chapters, Galliano approached clothing as a medium through which multiple worlds could coexist. Galliano’s creative universe has consistently emerged through connections between different places, periods, artistic traditions and identities. References become part of an evolving creative map where images inspire ideas, ideas inform materials and materials ultimately produce emotion.
The exhibition will translate this philosophy through three movements titled Bearings, Horizons and Atlas of Transformation.
Bearings establishes a conceptual chronology of Galliano’s career within the historical and cultural circumstances surrounding his work.
Horizons examines recurring sources of inspiration including geography, history, art, storytelling and performance. Collections become imaginative environments constructed through relationships between references and ideas.
Atlas of Transformation moves inside the creative process itself. Research books, drawings, toiles, fittings and completed garments will reveal how an initial idea develops into a finished creation.
For The 1%, this access to process offers particular significance. Connoisseurship increasingly extends into understanding how exceptional objects are conceived, researched and produced. The atelier, sketchbook and prototype become part of the cultural value surrounding the finished piece.
Craftsmanship as Cultural Capital

The Art Basel and UBS research found that 40 percent of High Net Worth individuals planned to purchase additional art during the following 12 months, while 84 percent expressed optimism about the short term future of the global art market.
The same study also revealed the importance of generational legacy. Across generations, 80 percent of collectors intended to pass their collections to children or spouses, demonstrating how exceptional objects can become part of family identity and cultural inheritance.
