The Interview
The One Percent:
How has the definition of luxury hospitality evolved over the past few years, particularly among Ultra High Net Worth travelers?
Selenne Bordewijk:
Luxury hospitality has evolved from being centered primarily around opulence and status to focusing on personalization, privacy, wellness, and meaningful experiences. In today’s modern society AI is impacting all industries, but nothing can take away the human connection.
Luxury hospitality is defined by emotional connection, discretion, and personalization. Luxury hospitality is about creating experiences that are effortless, memorable, and most importantly unique to each guest.
The One Percent:
In your view, what differentiates Miami today from other global luxury destinations such as Dubai, London, or the South of France?
Selenne Bordewijk:
Since the pandemic, Miami has evolved into a truly sophisticated and cosmopolitan destination, becoming a global hub for entertainment, culture, and world-class culinary experiences.
What differentiates Miami from other luxury destinations is the diversity of experiences it offers all in one place, from major sporting events and international art fairs to concerts, nightlife, luxury shopping, and Michelin-starred restaurants.
What makes Miami especially unique is its cultural energy and strong Latin American influence, which creates a vibrant atmosphere unlike anywhere else in the world. There’s a certain lifestyle, warmth, and international flair that makes Miami feel dynamic year-round and continues to position it as one of the most desirable luxury destinations globally.
The One Percent:
What are some of the key expectations luxury travelers now seek beyond traditional hospitality?
Selenne Bordewijk:
Today’s luxury travelers are looking for much more than beautiful hotels and exceptional service. They want highly personalized and authentic experiences that feel unique to them. Privacy, wellness, flexibility, and exclusivity have become major priorities.
Guests are also seeking seamless experiences where technology enhances convenience while still valuing genuine human connection and emotional engagement. They want to feel understood, recognized, and connected to the destination through curated experiences, culinary offerings, culture, and wellness.
Ultimately, luxury travelers today are looking for experiences that are effortless, meaningful, and memorable.
The One Percent:
How important has personalization become within the modern luxury hospitality experience?
Selenne Bordewijk:
Luxury travelers expect experiences that feel tailored specifically to their preferences, lifestyle, and needs rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. Personalization is expected and remains a key pillar of luxury hospitality.
The One Percent:
Miami continues to attract international investors, entrepreneurs, and affluent residents. How has this transformed the hospitality landscape?
Selenne Bordewijk:
Miami’s growth as a destination for international investors, entrepreneurs, and affluent residents has significantly elevated the hospitality landscape.
The city has become more global, sophisticated, and competitive, driving demand for higher levels of service, luxury experiences, wellness, fine dining, and exclusive lifestyle offerings.
We’ve also seen a major evolution in the type of traveler and resident coming to Miami. Guests are staying longer, blending business with leisure, and seeking experiences that feel more personalized and residential in style. This has pushed luxury hotels to continuously innovate while maintaining exceptional service standards.
At the same time, global events, world-class dining, art, sports, and entertainment have positioned Miami as a year-round luxury destination rather than just a seasonal market.
The One Percent:
In your opinion, what role does emotional connection and storytelling now play within luxury hospitality brands?
Selenne Bordewijk:
Emotional connection and storytelling play a critical role because guests are looking for experiences that feel meaningful and memorable, not just transactional.
Luxury travelers want to connect with a brand on a deeper level and feel something beyond the physical product.
Storytelling helps create a sense of identity and authenticity, whether it’s through the culture of the destination, the people behind the service, or the unique experiences offered by the hotel.
Emotional connection is what builds loyalty. Guests may forget certain details, but they will always remember how a place made them feel. That human connection is what truly differentiates luxury hospitality brands today.
The One Percent:
How do you see luxury hospitality evolving over the next five years?
Selenne Bordewijk:
Over the next five years, I believe luxury hospitality will continue to become even more personalized, experience-driven, and wellness-focused.
Guests will expect seamless technology and AI integration to enhance convenience and anticipation of their needs, but at the same time, the human connection and emotional aspect of hospitality will become even more valuable.
I also see travelers placing greater importance on privacy, exclusivity, sustainability, and authentic experiences that connect them to the destination and local culture.
Luxury hotels will need to evolve beyond simply offering beautiful accommodations and instead focus on creating meaningful, customized experiences that feel effortless and memorable.
Ultimately, the brands that will stand out are the ones that successfully combine innovation with genuine hospitality and emotional connection.
The One Percent:
What type of experiences or environments resonate most today with affluent global travelers?
Selenne Bordewijk:
Affluent global travelers today are drawn to experiences and environments that feel authentic, personalized, exclusive, and emotionally meaningful.
They are looking for more than traditional luxury. They want a sense of connection, privacy, and uniqueness.
Wellness-focused environments, residential-style luxury, immersive cultural experiences, curated culinary journeys, and destinations that offer both sophistication and relaxation resonate strongly with today’s travelers.
They also value spaces that feel intimate and personalized rather than overly formal or transactional.
The One Percent:
What trends are you currently observing among international luxury clientele visiting Miami?
Selenne Bordewijk:
Today’s travelers increasingly prioritize unique and memorable experiences over traditional displays of luxury.
Private yacht charters, exclusive cultural access, wellness retreats, curated culinary moments with renowned chefs, and personalized local discoveries often hold greater value than simply reserving the largest suite.
Wellness has evolved beyond a spa offering and is now a central motivation for travel. Guests seek holistic experiences that encompass fitness, recovery, sleep optimization, nutritious dining, mindfulness, and customized wellness programs that integrate seamlessly into their lifestyles.
Miami continues to attract entrepreneurs, executives, and investors who blend business with leisure travel. Many guests extend their business trips into longer stays, often bringing family along and seeking accommodations that support both productivity and relaxation.
The One Percent:
Finally, what does modern luxury personally mean to you today?
Selenne Bordewijk:
For me, modern luxury is defined by time, personalization, and meaningful experiences.
I value authentic connections delivered through exceptional service and experiences that are thoughtfully tailored to my needs, and those of my family when traveling with my children.
True luxury hospitality is about feeling recognized, understood, and genuinely cared for in a way that feels effortless and natural.
While beautiful accommodations and world-class amenities remain important, the most memorable experiences are often shaped by meaningful human connections, thoughtful attention to detail, and the ability to create moments that leave a lasting emotional impression.
